# European Cookie Legislation

A piece of privacy legislation, known as the 'cookie law", requires websites to [get consent](https://help.volusion.com/s/obtainingexplicitconsentforcookies21?hsLang=en-us) from visitors to store or retrieve any information on a computer, smartphone, or tablet. All websites targeted towards European Union (EU) citizens are now expected to comply with the law.

The Volusion software is capable of complying with European Cookie Legislation, provided that you fully disclose all cookies and update necessary store settings. See our [Volusion Software Cookies](https://help.volusion.com/s/volusionsoftwarecookies?hsLang=en-us) article for all the details.

Volusion is unable to provide legal advice on the best practice for obtaining permissions required under the law, but you can see the [Information Commissioner's Office website](https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/online/cookies/) for official guidance on complying with the EU e-Privacy Directive.
