Category Terms You Should Know
This guide covers all the settings available on individual category pages as well as those that apply to all categories (available by clicking Settings above the Categories table).

Part I - Basic Settings and Category Images
These are the simple terms you'll want to know when filling out your Category info!�

Basic Settings

ID (the automatically-generated Category ID number, which can't be changed).

Category Name (the name of the category as it will be displayed on your storefront).

Subcategory of (this lets you assign a category as a subcategory to an existing category).

Hide category (hide a category so it can't be seen on your storefront).

Show in menu (specify which navigation menu the category should appear in).
Category Images

Banner Image (the image that displays on the category page).
-
Subcategory Image (the image that displays on on a parent category page).
-
Advanced Settings (more advanced features to control the look of your page).
Part II - Advanced Info
Here are some further terms you may want to know for the more advanced tabs.

Category Descriptions

Category Description (descriptive text or HTML that displays when a category is selected).

Category Description Short (descriptive text or HTML that's displayed for a subcategory).

Secondary Description (Below Products) (Text or HTML that's displayed at the bottom of a category page).
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Category URL Text (the value entered here will be used to create the category's static URL if Search Engine Optimization Friendly URLs is enabled).

Meta Tag Title (allows merchants to enter a meta title for each of their categories).

Meta Tag Description (text that describes the category for search engines).

Meta Tag Keywords (tells search engines what keywords relate to the category).

Meta override (for advanced users only: this will override all other SEO settings for this category).
Category Display

Subcategory Display Mode 1 and 2 (allows you to display a list of linked subcategories at the top or left side of the page).

Subcategory Display Columns (where you can specify the number of columns in which subcategories are displayed).
Product Display

Product Display Mode (lets you decide how the category page will display products that are members of the category).

Default Sort By (lets you choose how you want products sorted on the page).

Display Columns (the number of columns to be used to display products within a category page).

Display rows (default number of rows to be used to display products within a category page).

Display Featured Products Only (if set to Y, this will display the Featured Products image above the products in a category).
Misc.

Alternate URL (lets you enter a URL that will override all other settings for this category and redirect the browser when a user clicks on the category link).

Alternate URL Pop-up (lets the above URL open in a new window).

Filter category (Forces the system to use either the Price or Manufacturer field for all products contained within a certain category. This can slow down your website, so use it with caution.)

Private Section Customers Only (for advanced users only: allows an override of meta information for the category).

Custom Where Clause (for advanced users only: allows entry of SQL queries to affect which products are displayed within the category page).

Custom Metatags Override (for advanced users only: allows an override of META information pertaining to the category).
Part III - Category Settings (All Categories)
To see a table of all categories in your store, go to Inventory > Categories and click View List. You can apply the following settings to all categories and subcategories by clicking the thee-dot actions menu and selecting Categories & Subcategories Settings.

Display Subcategory Products on Main Category Page (allows all products assigned to subcategories to also display on the main category page to which these subcategories are assigned)

Search Results Columns (the number of columns used to display product search results: works with Search Results Rows).

Search Result Rows (the number of columns used to display product search results: works with Search Results Columns).

Enable Search Refinement (lets you create filter categories, which allow visitors �to sort the products by price or manufacturer).
