This article covers automatic inventory tracking with the Inventory extension. It's for merchants who have already set inventory tracking on one or more products.

Once you set a product's stock quantity, each unit purchased will automatically reduce the Quantity total until it reaches zero. Units are subtracted when the order is shipped.

Purchases

When a shopper tries to purchase a product that's out of stock, they won't be able to add it to the cart. Instead of an Add to Cart button, the product will have an Out of Stock button (on the product details page, and on any other pages where it displays).

In these cases, a shopper can still visit the product details page, but there is no available option to add the product to the cart. When a shopper tries to purchase more units of a product than you have in stock by using the + symbol on the product details page, the Add to Cart button changes to say Out of Stock.

If a shopper adds an available number of units to the cart, but then tries to add more than you have in stock, the + button is automatically disabled.

When a variant of a product is out of stock, shoppers can still select it on the product page, but they can't add it to the cart (an Out of Stock message overwrites the Add to Cart button). Likewise, when a shopper tries to add more copies of a variant to the cart than you have in stock, the Add to Cart button changes to Out of Stock. If a shopper adds an available number of variants to the cart and then tries to add more than you have in stock, the + button is automatically disabled.

Returns and Cancellations

When you cancel an order containing products for which you track inventory, the quantity returned is the same as the quantity purchased.

When you refund an order containing products for which you track inventory, you can manually set the quantity refunded, but the default value is the same as the quantity purchased.
